Honestly, I just made it up—but I was thinking about how much sports shaped me and how I wanted other young women to realize they belong in the game too.
Back in 2016, I had just finished reading Venus Williams’ book Come to Win, and what stuck with me was how many women used their sports experience as the foundation for success in other areas of life—whether becoming doctors, CEOs, entrepreneurs, or designers. Sports gave them the grit, discipline, and confidence to do some incredible things.
But the reality is tough: girls are twice as likely to quit sports before the age of 14. That fact disturbed me deeply. Thinking back on my own teenage years, sports were the one thing that kept me grounded and gave me confidence when I didn’t feel like I fit in anywhere else. The truth is, there are over 8,000 sports in the world. To hear a girl say “I don’t like sports” felt like a loss—not just of physical activity, but of all the emotional, mental, and relational benefits that come with being on a team, learning to compete, and finding joy in movement.
In fact, 96% of women in executive positions played sports. That’s not an accident. Sports aren’t just about the physical—they shape how you lead, connect, and persevere.
Why that Word Though?
I remembered growing up, girls would say they didn’t want to play sports because:
“I’m not a tomboy. Sports aren’t my thing.”
However, I’ve read about and met so many successful women—athletes, leaders, and entrepreneurs who proudly describe themselves as former tomboys. Not because they fit every stereotype, but because they were willing to do things most people like them weren’t “supposed” to do. That’s what my own sports journey felt like, too. I was just willing to keep doing the sports I loved, even if people didn’t fully understand why.
That willingness to be unconventional, to push past stereotypes, and to stay in the game became the heartbeat of my brand.
Why Spell It That Way?
When I was playing around with a name for my business, I remembered the whole tomboy thing. I saw the phonetic spelling of “Tom” and was like that looks cool. Then it looked kind of plain and weird to me to just have Tämboy. So I added a “w.”
That little “w” made all the difference. Suddenly, it felt right:
The “w” could stand for women.
Or in Jamaican Patois, “bwoy” it still means boy.
So the name became this mix—being different, celebrating women in sports, and carrying a little flavor.
The Journey of the Brand
TämBwoy has taken on many forms over the years. I tried creating a business incubator, T-shirts, bracelets, a book, podcasts—even planning sports events. Then COVID hit, and like many people, I had to pivot. Just as the world began to open back up for me to plan an event, I ruptured my Achilles. Another pivot.
But through every twist, setback, and restart, the root of the brand has stayed the same: to help people get involved in sports and stay involved.
Today, TämBwoy Training & Recovery is the next chapter of that vision. Whether through sports massage, recovery services, or mobility training, the mission is still to keep people “in the game”—because sports aren’t just something we do, they’re something that shapes who we become.
It’s A Business Name and…
A reminder that:
Sports aren’t only about physical ability—they’re about life skills that carry into every arena.
Being different, unconventional, or even misunderstood can be your greatest strength.
No matter what obstacles show up, the game doesn’t have to end—you can pivot, recover, and keep going.
That’s why TämBwoy exists. To help me, you, and anyone willing to put in the work stay in the game—on the court, in the workplace, and in life.
