Why Do I Feel More Sore, Heavy, or Tight After Being Active All Summer?

Have you come down a little from the “summer high” and noticed your body feeling sore, heavy, or tight lately?

You may have been walking more, playing pickleball, hiking, gardening, chasing the kids around outside, or simply enjoying everything summer has to offer. We’d all expect to feel accomplished after staying active this summer—not like our bodies need their own vacation.

There’s a good chance our bodies aren’t asking you to stop and hibernate for the rest of the year.

They may just be asking us to add recovery to the schedule.

The Common Mindset: “I’ll Recover Later.”

One of the most common things I see a lot of people do is push recovery to the bottom of the list.

“I don’t have time.”

“I’ll recover later.”

“My body will take care of itself.”

I get it because I used to think the same way.

Before I ruptured my Achilles, anything related to recovery felt like a waste of time. I’d rather spend my time playing sports, studying, or doing literally anything else. Most days I wasn’t in pain, so I figured a shower and a good night’s sleep were enough for when I was.

Recovery didn’t seem important because nothing felt extremely wrong. I could still get up and do what I enjoyed doing.

Until I couldn’t

Looking back, I wasn’t giving my body many opportunities to recover from everything I was asking it to do.

Recovery isn’t something you earn after you’re broken down.

It’s part of staying active in the first place.

Recovery Isn’t Taking Time Away From Activity

One thing I hear often is:

“If I take time to recover, that’s less time doing the things I enjoy.”

But what if recovery actually helps you enjoy those things longer?

Can we agree that if all we do is inhale and don’t make time to exhale… We will pass out!

Activity creates stress.

Recovery helps your body adapt to that stress.

Without enough recovery, your body may start feeling heavier, tighter, or more fatigued—not because movement is bad, but because it hasn’t had enough opportunities to reset.

Relax → Strengthen → Move

At TämBwoy, I like to think about recovery in three simple steps.

Relax

First, help your body slow down.

Sometimes your muscles don’t need another workout. They need a chance to relax.

That might include:

  • Massage
  • Recovery tools like a foam roller, massage gun, or heating pad
  • Deep breathing
  • Simply giving yourself permission to slow down

Relaxing isn’t about doing nothing.

It’s about reducing the extra stress your body has been carrying.

Strengthen

Participating in recovery doesn’t mean becoming inactive.

After your body has had a chance to relax, continue building the strength and support that helps you stay active.

This doesn’t have to be an intense workout.

Simple strength exercises, activation work, or controlled movements can help your body continue adapting to everything you’re asking it to do.

The goal isn’t to choose between activity and recovery.

It’s to make room for both.

Move

Finally, keep moving.

Do the things you enjoy doing!

When you make the time for relaxing (exhaling) and strengthening (inhaling), and when you get around to the activities you love, you will feel much better doing them and will be able to do them for as long as possible.

One Simple Thing to Try This Week

This week, schedule one recovery session just like you would schedule a workout.

Maybe it’s twenty minutes with a foam roller.

Maybe it’s a GET READY session.

Maybe it’s a RECOVER+ session

Whatever you choose, make recovery part of your routine instead of something you only think about when you’re already sore (can’t breathe).

Also, avoid swinging too far in either direction.

Too much activity without recovery can leave your body feeling worn down.

Too much rest without movement can leave your body feeling sluggish.

The goal is balance.

Give Your Body a Chance to Recover

If your legs or body feel like they’ve been doing a lot this summer, RECOVER+ was designed for exactly that.

RECOVER+ is a quick, intentional recovery boost for people who want to help their body reset without taking hours out of their day. Whether you’ve been active outdoors, training for an event, or simply feeling the effects of a busy season, it’s an easy way to make recovery part of your routine.

If you’re in Lansing or East Lansing and have been telling yourself you’ll recover later, maybe later is today.

Book a RECOVER+ session and give your body the opportunity to recover so you can Stay in the Game.
